3D Scanning & Reverse Engineering

From physical object to accurate 3D model. We digitise existing parts, machines and structures so they can be modified, improved or reproduced, even when original drawings no longer exist.

How does it work?

In reverse engineering, we translate a physical object back into a fully editable 3D CAD model. This process starts with an accurate 3D scan and ends with a production-ready design in SolidWorks. Ready for modification, certification or manufacturing.

Step 1
3D Scanning

The physical object is scanned using an industrial 3D scanner, producing a detailed point cloud with sub-millimetre accuracy.

Step 2
Mesh & Clean-up

The point cloud is converted into a triangle mesh. Noise is removed, holes are filled and the surface is optimised.

Step 3
CAD Modelling

Using SolidWorks ScanTo3D, the mesh is converted into a parametric solid model: fully editable, measurable and ready for engineering.

Step 4
Production Drawing

The 3D model is developed into production drawings with dimensions, tolerances and material specifications. Ready for manufacturing.

Applications

3D scanning and reverse engineering is valuable in situations where original documentation is missing, or where existing geometry forms the starting point for a new design.

Software & Expertise

We work with SolidWorks as our primary CAD platform, including the ScanTo3D module for importing and processing scan data. This is the same environment in which all our Technical Designs are developed: from concept design to production drawing. The workflow from scanned data to a fully developed design is therefore continuous and efficient.

This service is part of our Technical Designs division. 3D scanning bridges the gap between the physical world and our digital design process: from scan to production drawing under one roof.

Part without a drawing? We'll turn it into a 3D model.
